2024 Wall Quilt Show, Portage, WI

I have a quilt in the current Wall Quilt Show at the Portage Center for the Arts!  See my photos.

My quilt is titled “In the Shade of the Old Cupcake Tree”.  It was originally made as an entry in a Great Wisconsin Quilt Show challenge.  The challenge theme was “baking”.  P.S. The vest I’m wearing was made for a different challenge, in a different show, 20+ years ago.

John C. Campbell Folk School 2023

THIS could be the year that you visit the awesome John C. Campbell Folk School!  I was 

lucky enough to take a one week workshop there last month.  The school is located in Brasstown, NC. Brasstown is in the southwest corner of the state.

I learned some new techniques in the Shibori Dyeing class taught by Emily Ayers.  Following are some photos from my most recent trip to Brasstown.  I have now taken three classes at the Folk School.  I’ve also taught two classes there. 

I made a dress and harem pants several months before traveling to Brasstown.

I used Kona PDF (prepared for dyeing) cotton for those garments.  See before and 
after photos below.

I purchased a white jacket from St. Vincent’s here in Madison before heading to 

North Carolina.  I didn’t pay much for it.  I thought it would be a good candidate 

for dyeing.  And it was!

I also dyed some cotton fabric yardage, a silk scarf, and a pair of socks!  It’s

pretty obvious that I love the turquoise range of color!

Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom

A friend and I recently took a rigid heddle loom weaving workshop at The Sow’s
Ear, a local yarn shop.  I purchased a Cricket Loom over a year ago.  The time had
come to learn to use it.  Class was taught by Liz Avery, a friendly and patient
instructor.

While other students used two different yarns, I decided to use four different
yarns in my project.  I learned a lot in the class. I’m pleased with the way my
scarf turned out!  You can see it in the last photo.

Studio Furnishings: The IKEA RASKOG Cart

I love these carts.  They are sold at IKEA and have long been a favorite
of artists working in any medium.  The price has come down over the
years.  Colors are changed from time to time.  If you love a certain color,
snap it up now, before it is replaced by something else!  I was lucky to
acquire three of the turquoise carts before IKEA dropped them in 2016.

IKEA markets these as kitchen "utility" carts.  They should be called
"art carts", simple as that!  Sure, you can use them in your kitchen,
office, or bedroom.  But they really belong in your studio!  They will work
hard for you, never giving you grief about the art you create!

I’ve added “BYGEL” hooked cups to the sides of several of my carts. These

cups can hold markers, scissors, and other art supplies. IKEA sells BYGEL 

cups only in stores; they are not sold on IKEA’s website.
